A couple of months ago I mentioned a book that was an absolute blinder – The Dog Stars by Peter Heller. It’s now been published and it’s a must read. The language is beautiful, the story spare and even brutal at times, but it’s one of those books you finish and you want to read it again straight away, because the story has trapped you, the language has entranced you. Heller has written non-fiction before, he’s an adventure writer, and this comes through in the story – Heller knows what he’s talking about. It’s a post apocalyptic novel where some kind of mutant flu has wiped out most of the world’s population and those that are left will do anything to get the remaining supplies of food. Hig lives with his dog in a vacant McMansion near an airfield. His only neighbour is damaged Bangley, a man determined to do anything to survive, who thinks that Hig lives too much in the past. Hig is trying to find a reason to keep living, so he and his dog regularly fly his Cessna around an area limited by the amount of fuel available. And then one day Hig hears a voice through his headphones and decides to investigate. A really terrific book.
